Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians passed through here. Romans, Moors and Portuguese fought over it. Lacóbriga is the Roman name for the town. Later, the Arabs called it Zawiya (Zawaia). In 1249 it was definitively incorporated into Portuguese territory by King Afonso III.

However, it was the Arab civilization that had the greatest influence on the lives of future peoples. The linguistic, cultural and architectural traces left behind are still visible today.

As Zawaia already existed in the FCI's list of affixes, we opted to put Al, which fixed at the beginning of words was actually the Arabic definite article. 

How did this breed come to be in our house?
It was Rita, offered by a friend and without a pedigree but with a spectacular temperament, who made us fall in love with the breed. When Rita left us at the age of 15, this great adventure began with the purchase of Rima, the founder of our kennel.
